We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Client Feedback and Satisfaction: I focused on therapists with reviews highlighting empathy and a genuine ability to help clients make progress.

Specialization and Approach: I looked for psychotherapists offering services for anxiety or trauma, among others.

Value for Cost: I considered whether clients felt they received meaningful progress and support in relation to session costs, ensuring their investment truly benefits their mental health.

Professional Credentials and Reputation: I prioritized therapists with licensure, professional memberships, and a strong reputation among clients and peers alike.

LifeStance Health always feels accessible and reliable. With a massive national network, it’s clear they’ve built a system designed to meet people wherever they are in their wellness journey.

What really impressed me is how LifeStance makes care flexible. You can see a therapist in person at one of 550 clinics across 33 states or virtually from the comfort of your home.

Their matching system is fantastic, pairing clients with the right provider from over 7,700 clinicians, so you actually feel heard and understood from day one.

Insurance worries? Forget them. LifeStance accepts 300+ plans, including coverage for therapy and psychiatry. Its 8,000+ clinicians are licensed or licensee-supervised and held to strict internal quality standards.

Offers practical tools and compassionate support

“Dr. Candi Kizer is, without question, one of the most exceptional counselors I’ve had the privilege of working with. Her thoughtful approach, deep insight, and unwavering professionalism have made a lasting impact on my personal growth and recovery. I have been fortunate to remain under her care since her time at her previous office. Although I was briefly assigned to another counselor, the connection and effectiveness simply didn’t compare. Dr. Kizer consistently meets me where I am mentally (and even on a spiritual level when necessary) without overdoing it, offering practical tools and compassionate support that truly make a difference.”

I felt respected and was treated as an equal partner

“I’ve had one appointment with Dr. Grover and was so happy with my session. In the past when I’ve had to visit a psychiatrist, I felt like I was given 20 minutes and could feel that I was being rushed out. I was so anxious about this appointment with Dr. Grover because there were a lot of factors to be considered and I was concerned I wouldn’t be able to explain everything in the time I was given… she spoke with me for nearly an hour and a half, asked me to do some research on medications she was recommending, and even followed up again via phone that evening so we could discuss further. I felt respected and was treated as an equal partner in the decision making. The last time I needed psychiatric care, the situation was not handled properly (partly due to my inability to be a transparent participant in the process). I am very confident in the care I am receiving this time around. I highly recommend Dr. Grover!”

Freedom Within’s mission is simple yet powerful: to provide quality care through an approach that blends compassion and authenticity. Right from the start, it’s clear they prioritize making you feel seen and comfortable.

What really impressed me is how flexible and evidence-based their approach is. The clinicians are trained in a variety of proven methods designed to help you work toward your goals, whether individually or as a family.

Psychotherapy, also called counseling, is at the heart of their work. They offer clients a structured yet personalized path toward becoming their best selves.

They offer an impressive range of services—individual and couples counseling, military counseling, online sessions, and even nutrition counseling.

On top of that, they also have a 5-day email series anyone can try. Calm Your Anxiety is packed with gentle guidance and practical tools to help you feel grounded and in control.

I also love that Freedom Within is inclusive and welcoming, with memberships in TherapyDen and the Postpartum Health Alliance.

The only minor drawback is that they don’t offer group therapy, which some clients may find helpful for shared experiences and community support.

Pros

  • Flexible and evidence-based care
  • Offers counseling as a structured foundation
  • Wide range of mental wellness services
  • Free 5-day email series for everyone
  • A member of TherapyDen
  • A member of Postpartum Health Alliance

Cons

She is excellent at helping one set clear, actionable goals

“I cannot stress enough what an amazing therapist Rachel Wein is. The first thing that is clear about Rachel is that she has a deep and extensive understanding of various therapeutic approaches that she tailors to meet one’s unique needs.

But I think what truly sets her apart from the many knowledgeable therapists that are out there, is her genuine passion for what she does, and her exceptional ability to connect with clients.

She truly creates an environment where one feels safe to express any thoughts and emotions without judgment. Her relatable nature makes it easy to open up about even the most difficult topics, and her empathy allows one to feel truly understood.

She is excellent at helping one set clear, actionable goals, and she consistently provides the support and guidance needed for one to stay on track. Her ability to break down larger challenges into manageable steps is incredibly valuable!

In short, you are in good hands with Rachel as your therapist. If you’re looking for a therapist who combines vast knowledge with genuine care, an exceptional ability to connect, and a commitment to helping you reach your goals, I cannot recommend her highly enough.”

I almost exclusively did virtual appointments, which worked great for me

“Alyssa Theis was an incredible therapist. She walked with me through the worst season of my life–I connected with her at the end of a horrific pregnancy, traumatic birth, and the aftermath of a chronic illness. She also helped me through betrayal from friends, faith community, a family diagnosis of behavioral/learning challenges, being publicly “cancelled,  and helping me work through issues with my faith and being a woman in leadership.

If you are struggling with similar experiences, have PTSD or trauma symptoms,  post-postpartum depression and anxiety, or anxiety in general, I can’t recommend her enough. She helped me over two years to go from being nearly 100% nonfunctional to being able to live life again. I will be forever grateful!

I am glad they accepted my insurance at the time. The office did good updating me on appointments, delays, and the staff did an excellent job helping with extra billing requests. I found their portal usable as well.

I almost exclusively did virtual appointments, which worked great for me with a newborn and then napping toddler. However, their office was nice and convenient as well (although a bit on the warm side).”

Established in 2018, Healthy Minds shaped its approach around helping clients feel genuinely seen and understood, not just diagnosed and treated.

What really stood out is their focus on matching you with a therapist who understands your symptoms while also approaching you as a whole person. That kind of thoughtful pairing can make therapy feel less clinical and far more personal.

Healthy Minds works by supporting those dealing with anxiety, panic attacks, stress management struggles, and relationship challenges.

They focus on college students, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and BIPOC (black, indigenous, and People of Color) communities, among others. This adds a meaningful layer of inclusivity and cultural awareness.

Their services include individual counseling and online therapy, all managed through a secure client portal that keeps everything convenient.

They’re also verified by Psychology Today and are members of TherapyDen, reinforcing their focus on inclusivity and warmth.

The only real drawback is that services are limited to clients 16 and older, which may not suit families seeking care for younger children.

Pros

  • Does proper therapist matching
  • Over 5 years in the business
  • Supports a variety of mental wellness issues
  • Caters to LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities
  • Offers individual and couples counseling
  • Verified by Psychology Today
  • A member of TherapyDen

Cons

  • Services are limited to clients aged 16 and older

I feel lighter, stronger, and more at peace

“I just wrapped up my second round of therapy here, and it’s honestly been such a positive experience. My therapist, Anna Sarao, has been incredible. With her support, I’ve been able to work through so much, and I feel lighter, stronger, and more at peace than I have in a long time.

If you’re Filipino or Asian Pacific Islander, I can’t recommend Anna enough. She really understands the culture, family dynamics, and expectations that come with it, which made the therapy feel even more effective. Because of that, I was able to make real progress and grow in ways I didn’t think were possible before.

Big thank you to Healthy Minds Counseling, hands down the best go-to therapy practice in San Diego!”

Her support has helped me grow more confident in myself

“I found Tati at a time when I was facing a number of past situations I had yet to heal from. She made me feel comfortable and heard from the very beginning. Two years later she continues to be an integral part of my support system.

Her demeanor is warm, compassionate and attentive and she’s someone you can open up to completely. Her capacity for understanding allows me to be my most vulnerable self during our sessions, and I look forward to every session I have with her. She’s given me perspective on past situations in order for me to heal and provided me with countless tools to cope with my anxiety and push past my fears in the now.

Her support has helped me grow more confident in myself and in navigating my relationships and I couldn’t be more grateful for her guidance!”

If you’re looking for therapy that’s both expert and genuinely human, Dr. Jason N. Linder’s practice delivers.

From the first conversation, it’s clear that the team isn’t just highly trained; they actually care. Whether you’re working through trauma or personal growth, they create a space where you feel heard.

Dr. Linder is a Doctor of Psychology, an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, and a professor. He has certifications in EMDR therapy, is an Approved Consultant, and a training facilitator.

His expertise spans emotionally focused couple therapy, addiction (Motivational Interviewing and family/group), and transgender and immigration evaluations.

I also love that the team is social-justice-oriented, LGBTQ+-affirming, and sex-positive. This makes it easy for anyone to feel safe and empowered.

Telehealth appointments add flexibility, and if Dr. Linder’s fees are a stretch, you can work with incredible associates. These include Colton Williges and Bridget KerMorris, among others, who together cover just over half the cost. Dr. Linder guides the process.

The only downside is that the practice doesn’t accept insurance or bill providers directly, which may matter for PPO coverage.

Pros

  • A highly trained team of therapists
  • AAMFT Approved Supervisor
  • EMDR-certified consultant/training facilitator
  • Expertise in transgender and immigration evaluations
  • Social-justice-oriented
  • LGBTQ+ affirmative
  • Uses a sex-positive approach
  • Offers telehealth appointments for convenience

Cons

  • Does not accept insurance or bill providers directly

He works effectively with individuals, couples, and families

“Jason Linder, Psy.D., MFT is an exceptional therapist, and writer. I have known him professionally for over 10-years. He is bilingual (English/Spanish). He works effectively with individuals, couples and families. Dr. Linder has a strong background in doing EMDR, family therapy, and trauma work. He is highly sensitive to cultural and social justice issues. He works diligently to stay on top of the latest research in the field, and is constantly seeking out new opportunities to learn, grow,  and stay on the cutting edge of knowledge. He is dedicated to his craft.  Dr. Linder is a second generation therapist, but a first at how he applies his knowledge and craft.  Clients love working with him because he is highly talented, dedicated and caring.”

I found him to be uncommonly curious, focused, and conscientious

“I had the privilege of providing EMDR consultation to Dr. Linder in his journey to become an EMDR Certified therapist. In our many hours together, I found him to be uncommonly curious, focused, and conscientious. He is also bright, caring, and has a good sense of humor. He knowledge of EMDR therapy is rare, and I would not hesitate to send clients his way because I know they would be in good hands. His expertise not only in EMDR, but also in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy positions him as a unique leader leader within the EMDR community, and we are lucky to have him – Mark Odland (MA, LMFT, MDIV – Approved EMDR Therapist and Consultant with Lion Counseling LLC) escapethecagenow.com

I left my visit feeling not only reassured but also confident

“I wanted to share my impressions of my visit with Sasha Speare, a family nurse practitioner.

From the start, she approached our visit with empathy and genuine attentiveness. It was clear that I was being listened to—not just heard—and that made a world of difference.

What stood out most was how she explained everything in a way that made sense to someone without a medical background. There was no jargon, no rushing—just clear, respectful communication that made me feel informed and understood. She took time to walk me through my concerns, what the possible causes might be, and what the next steps were, all without ever making me feel overwhelmed or dismissed.

Above all, Sasha was humble, grounded, and truly patient-centered. I left my visit feeling not only reassured but also confident in my understanding of my own diagnosis and the next steps.”
