Hours: Daily 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM, 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Menya Ultra focuses entirely on a natural umami core, avoiding artificial flavor enhancers to let their premium ingredients shine through. They even cook their signature pork broth under extreme heat to compress and maximize that savory depth.
Slurping down fresh noodles crafted daily with only salt and lye water is a true delight here. You can also directly request a low-sodium adaptation of your soup to fit your specific dietary preferences.

Really enjoyed it.
Negi Miso Ramen was garlicky and very tasty. Really enjoyed it. The eggs were perfectly done, very soft, gooey yolk. Nagoya fried chicken was good, but not everyone will like it. It’s a bit sweet and heavy. If you’re ok with that, you’ll probably love this fried chicken. I liked it.

Some of the best ramen I’ve had outside of Japan
This place is some of the best ramen I’ve had outside of Japan. It’s very popular so expect a bit of wait. The Nagoya fried chicken is definitely a great appetizer to get and different from typical kaarage. I got the tantan ramen with a pork cutlet and extra sliced chashu which were all delicious. I really wanted to try their braised chashu slices but they only have limited servings each day. Get there early if you want to try it!

2. Baikohken Ramen

Website: https://baikohken.com/
Address: 690 University Ave
Contact: 619-310-6698
Hours: Monday, Wednesday to Sunday 11:00 AM – 2:30 PM, 5:00 PM – 9:30 PM
Baikohken Ramen offers a double stock base that pairs hearty meat stock with a delicate seafood essence. This produces a distinctive historical flavor profile that’s hard to beat.
They do this through careful, slow simmering before merging the components together. And they use specific medium-thin curly noodles that are engineered perfectly to hold those rising steam aromas.
When I stopped by last month for a quick dinner, I instantly noticed the impressive daily execution and rigor the kitchen personnel applied to every bowl.
But because preparing these dual stocks demands extensive brewing hours, the kitchen struggles to execute rapid operational volume changes during sudden customer rushes.
You should also check their schedule carefully before visiting, as their flexible operating policies include non-fixed weekly closures.

Hands down the best ramen I’ve had EVER
Very authentic ramen shop! I didn’t think a ramen shop could beat Menya for me..but Baikohken was the spot to do it for me. The Butter corn miso had to be hands down the best ramen I’ve had EVER! It complimented the cold, rainy, New Year’s Eve perfectly! Comforting, delicious, and the servers were extremely sweet and helpful. I loved the place so much I even bought a t-shirt. Incredible, and I will be back over and over again whenever the craving hits. Thank you!

3. Buta Japanese Ramen

Website: https://butasd.com/
Address: 5201 Linda Vista Rd ste.103
Contact: 619-272-0795 | [email protected]
Hours: Tuesday to Sunday 11:00AM–9:00PM
Vegans and meat lovers alike can easily find comfort in a bowl at Buta Japanese Ramen. They offer either a savory coconut miso base or a traditional tahini infusion.
This restaurant is highly sought after for its signature slow-braised pork belly chashu that just melts on your tongue. For those wanting an intense aromatic kick, their garlic-packed bowls feature generous amounts of crispy chips and flavored oil.
I appreciate that the kitchen consistently ensures high food quality by preparing their rich broths and thin noodles fresh every morning.
However, craving noodles at the start of your workweek might require a backup plan since the storefront completely shuts down operations on Mondays.
Getting food delivered directly to your couch is also slightly tricky because their neighborhood delivery operations are restricted to specific areas within the city limits.

Everything was well balanced with amazing flavor
The ramen was spot on. The broth was filled with flavor and the pork melted in my mouth. I had the garlic chicken karaage and takoyaki as well it’s a happy place especially if you like garlic. Everything was well balanced with amazing flavor.

The quality of the broth and the chashu pork are truly top shelf!
I’m the type to drive anywhere for a good bowl of ramen so I had to try out Buta. I got their version of garlic tonkotsu, and the quality of the broth and the chashu pork are truly top shelf! Been a bunch of places in San Diego and this one easily makes my top 3 (only under 1. Ramen Ryoma in PB and 2. Underbelly in Little Italy). Draft sapporo was on special for $3 on a Thursday! Service was great, food came quick even with a packed house.

4. RakiRaki Ramen & Tsukemen

Website: https://rakirakiramen.com/
Address: 4646 Convoy St 102 – A,
Contact: 858-771-7254 | [email protected]
Hours: Daily 11:00 AM – 1:00 AM
Taking a unique approach to texture, Chef Watanabe of RakiRaki Ramen & Tsukemen developed proprietary organic noodles utilizing mochi for a remarkably distinct bite.
They bring authentic Tokyo street izakaya concepts to our coastline with their rich ramen, curry bowls, and donburi.
I recently met a friend here for lunch and was deeply impressed by their custom packaging designed to maintain exact taste profiles during transit.
Plus, I love that they serve dishes with artisanal aburi-style blistering to bring serious flavor depth. A meal here is the perfect start to a night of dining and drinking at the best wine tasting spots in San Diego.
But grabbing a quick bite is challenging because guests wait in long outdoor lines due to their popularity. Also, if you need large group catering, you have to plan around their restricted Monday through Friday availability window.

One of my favorite ramen spots
One of my favorite ramen spots in San Diego. This one is like an og in Claremont.
Yes, it is the ramen spot in that famous plaza where there is no parking, ever. So definitely when you plan to come here find street parking or where can you find one and stroll on down here to Rakiraki.
The broth they use here is so delicious! I would always recommend tonkotsu!
If you’re not into ramen, they have noodles, sushi and rice bowls. So take your pick!

Everything always comes out so flavorful
This place is simply delicious. Everything always comes out so flavorful. The broth is so creamy and packed with so much flavor. Bamboo shoots are amazing a lot of the toppings they have I’ve never tried but I love them all. So this place can introduce you to flavors that you never tried before and you can end up loving it. This is my favorite ramen spot. Love that they serve higher quality ingredients like organic chicken and love the underbelly!

5. Beshock Ramen East Village

Website: https://beshockramen.com/
Address: 1288 Market St,
Contact: 619-310-5498
Hours: Monday to Thursday, Sunday 11:30 AM – 9:00 PM | Friday to Saturday 11:30 AM – 10:00 PM
When I’m hunting for the best ramen in San Diego, BESHOCK in the East Village is my usual stop. Their menu ranges from classic pork tonkotsu and chicken paitan to a solid soy-based vegan bowl.
I typically grab the Spicy Miso, but the Creamy Vegan absolutely holds its own. For those looking for heat, their Tan Tan Ramen with ground pork gets the job done. Locals also love the garlicky Black Ramen.
What I particularly love is how any bowl pairs perfectly with their sommelier-curated sake list. Plus, the dining room has plenty of seating, and the serving staff is always genuinely helpful.
But trying to grab a midday bowl requires punctuality, as the lunch kitchen operates on a restricted schedule that finishes at 2:00 PM.

Generous portions and incredible flavor
I was so excited to eat here after hearing all the great things, and it absolutely did not disappoint! While other ramen spots might be fancier, this one delivers on generous portions and incredible flavor. I absolutely loved the **Tonkatsu** and the **pork chashu**—both were delicious. We also tried the desserts, and the **Japanese pudding** was super tasty, and the **Monaka ice cream** was a delicious finish. Highly recommend!

Flavorful and perfectly cooked
We had an amazing experience at BESHOCK Ramen East! The ramen was flavorful and perfectly cooked, with fresh ingredients that really hit the spot. The atmosphere is stylish and inviting, blending Japanese vibes with a Cali twist. Our waiter was absolutely class—super friendly, attentive, and gave great recommendations on the sake menu without being pushy. And surprisingly, the restroom was spotless and well-maintained, nothing like the dingy ones you find at other spots—definitely a pleasant surprise! Highly recommend for a top-notch meal. 5 stars all the way!
