Website:https://sandiegocenterforspeechtherapy.com/

Address: 12625 High Bluff Drive Suite #105

Contact: (858) 488-4810

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM – 6:30 PM

What really stands out about the San Diego Center for Speech & Myofunctional Therapy is their rare combination of dual-certified experts.

Their speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are also certified orofacial myologists, allowing them to treat speech problems alongside underlying muscle dysfunctions like tongue thrust.

A close friend of mine took her son here for a stubborn articulation issue, and the targeted muscle work made a massive difference in his progress.

The clinic functions as a multidisciplinary hub, offering occupational and physical therapy under one roof. They also have a very strong referral network of local dentists and pediatricians.

However, they’re an out-of-network provider, meaning you’ll need to pay upfront and manage the reimbursement paperwork yourself. They also enforce a strict cancellation policy that charges full price for missed sessions under 24 hours.

Pros

  • Dual-certified speech and myofunctional therapists
  • Multidisciplinary care, including physical therapy
  • Strong referral network from medical professionals
  • Interactive and child-friendly therapy approach

Cons

  • Out-of-network for insurance plans
  • Strict cancellation and no-show policies

Customer Reviews

We so appreciate her expertise and advice!

Nicole has been extremely helpful in advising us on our airway journey. She is so knowledgeable in all aspects of airway, and we have gleaned so much information from the many interviews she has done. There are just so many pieces to airway treatment from myofunctional/speech therapy, tongue ties, sleep studies, expanders, etc., it can get overwhelming. We so appreciate her expertise and advice!

We felt absolutely confident

I would gladly give 10 stars for the San Diego Center for Speech Therapy! We worked with Deborah Allbritain and she was amazing for our son. She made him comfortable right away and we felt absolutely confident in her assessment of his needs and her skills in treating him. Everyone associated with this practice was kind, caring, warm, considerate, and went out of their way to assist us! We recommend this practice without reservation!

Website:https://www.northstarslpc.com/

Address: 3555 Kenyon St. Suite 201

Contact: (619) 436-1187

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM – 6:30 PM

Families seeking a neurodiversity-affirming environment will appreciate the philosophy at North Star Speech and Language Pathology Center, Inc.

They focus entirely on a child-led approach that respects communication differences rather than trying to fix behaviors.

Their therapists specialize in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) assessments to support nonverbal individuals.

I love how the team places a heavy emphasis on caregiver coaching to empower parents with practical tools for home use. They even offer flexible delivery options across California, including virtual and in-home visits.

One downside to keep in mind is their physical office space. One of their clinic locations is only accessible by stairs, which could pose a mobility barrier. They also have limited direct insurance billing, accepting only a few specific plans like TRICARE.

Pros

  • Neurodiversity-affirming and child-led methods
  • Strong family coaching model
  • Expertise in AAC and complex needs
  • Flexible in-home and online scheduling

Cons

  • Limited direct insurance participation
  • Stair-only access at one location

Customer Reviews

We are so happy

Dr. Katherine is not only a phenomenal speech pathologist, but an outstanding human being. She is so patient and kind, so respectful while being mindful. There is not a Dr. I trust more in any capacity than her. My son has been in speech therapy for over 2 years with Dr. Katherine and his growth is untouched. We are so happy with the care he’s received and are excited to continue his therapies for however long he needs it.

Her speech has significantly improved

Dina is my daughter’s speech therapist and she is AMAZING. My daughter came in around September and in a short amount of time, her speech has significantly improved. Thank you Dina for making speech fun for both my daughter and myself, because I have also learned so much on how to help her grow.

If you’re looking for a comprehensive pediatric therapy hub, Kara Dodds & Associates is an excellent option. They provide speech and occupational therapies, alongside physical and feeding support, in a single location to simplify care.

During a recent conversation with a fellow parent in my neighborhood, they praised the clinic’s engaging, play-based approach that keeps kids motivated.

Their therapists cover a wide range of developmental conditions, using methods like the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS).

The center has been a trusted local provider since 2001 and works directly with multiple insurance plans to reduce financial stress.

Despite the strong clinical care, some families have noted inconsistent customer service at the front desk. Scheduling can sometimes be rigid, and administrative communication regarding appointment changes has occasionally been challenging.

Pros

  • Comprehensive multidisciplinary pediatric services
  • Engaging play-based learning environment
  • Accepts multiple major insurance plans
  • Extended weekday hours

Cons

  • Inconsistent administrative communication
  • Rigid scheduling structures

Listens to me and tailors my son’s speech sessions

My son has been receiving speech therapy services at Kara Dodds for 5 years now and most of the therapists have been great. His current therapist, May Ding, has been amazing! She really listens to me and tailors my son’s speech sessions based on all the info I give her. I think my son really looks forward to her sessions and he has fun while expanding his speech and communication. We are so fortunate and blessed to have her be a part of my son’s development.

Developed strong rapport with my child

I have personally witnessed the huge benefit of early intervention services at Kara Dodds. My child has received Speech and Occupational Therapy services at Kara Dodds for 2 years. The therapy provided by both speech therapist Taylor M. and occupational therapist Jenna G. has been exceptional. They both developed strong rapport with my child and their work with her has helped her speech and daily living skills to greatly improve. My greatest thanks to Ms. Taylor M. and Mrs. Jenna G. for their commitment, patience, and guidance when working with both my child and our family.

4. SmallTalk Pediatric Therapy

Website:https://smalltalkspeech.com/

Address: 1550 Hotel Circle North, Suite 120

Contact: (619) 647-.6157

Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 6:30 PM

Centered entirely on a play-based philosophy, SmallTalk Pediatric Therapy meets children exactly where they are developmentally. They excel at blending fun activities with clinical goals to keep young patients highly engaged during sessions.

The clinic also offers specialized social skills groups, allowing small groups of children to practice real-world interactions together.

What I like the most is their family-centered care model that encourages parents to actively participate so they can continue reinforcing those skills at home.

Plus, they operate across several convenient locations in San Diego and are in-network with most major insurance plans.

On the administrative side, however, there have been reports of inconsistent therapist availability. Some clients have experienced unannounced session cancellations or found that a student trainee was conducting the therapy without clear prior consent.

Pros

  • Highly personalized play-based methods
  • Small social skills group availability
  • In-network with major insurance providers
  • Multiple accessible San Diego locations

Cons

  • Occasional therapist availability issues
  • Unclear communication regarding substitute clinicians

Always kind and fun

My oldest has been with Smalltalk since late 2022, and this year my youngest has joined for speech therapy and they both love it. The therapists are always kind and fun, finding interesting ways for the kids to work at their goals. I wish there Smalltalks everywhere, we will miss them when we move!

Appreciate their help and patience

Small Talk Speech Therapy has been great for my Son. He’s having a speech delay, as he’s getting older, and they’ve been amazing. His therapist, Amanda, has been great with him! He’s always excited to see her, and he’s coming along with his speaking. It’s a good location in Mission Valley, off Hotel Circle, very centralized. I appreciate their help and patience with my child’s speech development!

Top-notch speech therapy services

Thank you to Analicia and Jamie. The staff is incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and compassionate. The therapists tailored their approach to meet my son’s individual needs, ensuring noticeable improvement in a very short time. The facility is welcoming, very neat, and equipped with the latest tools to support effective therapy. I highly recommend Lake Murray for anyone seeking top-notch speech therapy services.

Incredibly knowledgeable

We absolutely love the SLP working with our son, Kat. She is incredibly knowledgeable and an amazing teacher. She brings great energy and enthusiasm to our home, and our son loves working with her. She’s given us clear things to work on in between sessions and resources to use. Our son’s total word count has already expanded in the few weeks we have been working with Kat. We are so grateful for her help and expertise.
