If you want authenticity over trendy design, Architects Magnus is worth a close look. Hector and Pamela Magnus focus on homes that fit the client’s lifestyle instead of chasing whatever style is popular at the moment.
They’re especially strong with difficult sites, including coastal properties, hillside lots, and raw land. Their work with deep energy retrofits for midcentury modern homes also makes them a smart pick if comfort and efficiency matter to you.
We spoke with a homeowner who used them for a complicated hillside build. He liked how the team handled discretionary permits in-house, sharing that it took a lot of pressure off the early planning stage.
The tradeoff is capacity. Because this is a highly specialized boutique practice, timelines can stretch, and you may have to wait if they are already booked.

If you only need a small addition, the scale may not line up.

We recently walked through one of their mixed-use commercial spaces downtown, and the way they handled a difficult lot footprint really stood out.
The catch is scale. H2 is built for serious commercial, mixed-use, and multi-million-dollar projects, so it may not feel accessible for a basic room addition.
Parking around Little Italy can also make meetings frustrating.

The downside is the corporate structure. A large team can mean slower decisions, more layers of communication, and a possible gap between the principal you first meet and the junior staff managing daily details.
