Starting a build or renovation in Southern California is a massive undertaking that takes a lot of planning beyond a simple blueprint. The first hurdle is often finding a reliable construction company in San Diego that homeowners and developers can trust.
Between navigating local zoning laws and managing rising material costs, you need a partner who understands the local landscape. I’ve looked at the top players in the region to see who actually delivers on their promises.
Whether you’re planning a modern Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) or a sprawling commercial space, these firms stand out for their craftsmanship and reliability.
How much does construction cost in San Diego?
Building costs in the area vary significantly based on whether you’re working on a standard residential project or a high-end luxury build.
| Project Type | Estimated Cost per Square Foot |
| Standard Residential Build | $185 – $300 |
| High-End Luxury Home | $300 – $700+ |
| Commercial Tenant Improvements | $160 – $450 |
1. TR Construction

Website:https://tr-construction.com/
Address: 9335 Mira Mesa Blvd
Contact: (858) 537-6490
Hours: Monday to Friday: 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM
Finding a contractor who doesn’t juggle a dozen different subcontractors is a breath of fresh air. TR Construction features dedicated, in-house divisions for remodeling and electrical work to streamline complex projects.
I really appreciate how they keep everything under one roof, which usually means fewer delays and better communication. They even specialize in some technical niche services, like cast iron sewer line replacements, which many generalists won’t touch.
Overall, they’re a solid choice for homeowners looking for a simplified experience without the typical subcontracting mess.
However, you should keep in mind that their services are geographically limited exclusively to San Diego County. If your project sits just across the line, you might be out of luck.
Once the heavy lifting is finished, I suggest booking duct cleaning in San Diego to clear out any leftover debris before you move in.
Customer Reviews:
“Great customer experience…”
We had a great customer experience with TR Construction. Starting with getting a quote from Mike and through the repairs. Mike explained the scope of work and gave us a detailed estimate the same day. We were able to schedule the repairs easily. The crew arrived on time and completed the work that day. The office was very responsive. The cost was what was quoted. The work looked good. I received pictures taken on the roof to see the work. We already referred TR Construction to friend in the neighborhood.

“Amazing job”
TR Construction installed a retaining wall for us and did an amazing job! The crew dug everything out by hand; reinforced the wall with rebar, concrete, backfilled it and sealed it with a water barrier. We also had them repair a leak in our main bathroom; they had to demo everything and when the work was done, it was BEAUTIFUL!

2. Berkley Construction Inc

Hours: Monday to Friday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Most builders talk about staying on budget, but Berkley Construction Inc. really means it. They use a multi-tiered estimating system and formal Professional Services Agreements (PSA) to ensure clear communication.
I’ve actually sat in on a consultation where they walked through this PSA process, and it really demystifies where every dollar is going.
Led by Keith Berkley, the firm utilizes a cloud-based management platform so you can see live updates on your phone. This is perfect for those who want to track their custom sauna or steam room build in real-time.
On the downside, their five-stage estimation and discovery process can take quite a while to complete. If you’re in a massive rush to start digging tomorrow, this might not be the fastest route to take.
But for those who value precision and “dirt services” that help reduce soil export costs, the wait is usually worth it.
Customer Reviews:
“Recommended”
Berkley Construction built our 325 sq ft ADU on time and on budget. Our project manager was communicative and did a good job keeping to the timeline. Kieth and Robert are nice guys and they used quality subcontractors. We especially appreciated Berkley’s willingness to be flexible with the project scope, which allowed us to self-perform parts of the work in order to keep cost down. I have recommended Berkley to friends.

“Great builders”
This is a great company and highly recommended. Robert Barnes was our construction manager and handled the addition of our back-house (Studio Shed) with utmost professionalism and care. They are great builders and run a tight operation. Would definitely use Berkley Construction again on any future projects.
3. Hill Construction Company

Website:https://hillconstructioncompany.com/
Address: 4626 Albuquerque St. 2nd Floor
Contact: 858.272.2975
Hours: Monday to Thursday: 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM; Friday: 7:30 AM – 3:00 PM
If you’re looking to build a high-end luxury estate that belongs in a magazine, this is likely your top contender. Hill Construction Company leverages advanced Building Information Modeling (BIM) to master complex, technical luxury homes.
This tech allows them to visualize every pipe and beam before a single hammer swings, which is vital for subterranean engineering or historic preservation.
Founded by Pete Hill and currently led by Ryan Hill, they were even named to the inaugural Builder’s List for Architectural Digest’s Pro Directory.
My only real gripe is that they focus almost entirely on high-end luxury estates. This means if you’re just looking for a standard residential remodel or a budget-friendly update, they probably won’t be the right fit for your project.
They’re masters of the extraordinary, but that comes with a specific price point and scope that isn’t for every homeowner.
4. Harper Construction

Address: 2241 Kettner Blvd. Suite 300
Contact: (619) 233-7900
Hours: Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
With 50 years of experience, Harper Construction Company leverages a massive industry history to specialize in large, unique design-build projects.
I spoke with a project lead who mentioned their focus on sustainable green building, and their list of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) projects is seriously impressive.
They handle everything from preconstruction to final execution, using BIM technology to keep things precise on large-scale commercial or public builds.
They’ve won plenty of awards for safety and design, which gives a lot of peace of mind on a big job.
But you have to realize they aren’t really geared toward small residential tasks. If you’re trying to fix a guest bathroom, these aren’t the guys to call since they focus on massive design-build contracts.
5. Oak Construction Company

Website:https://www.oaksandiego.com/
Address: 1005 51st Street
Contact: 619.366.0211
Hours: By Appointment
For those looking to maximize their current property value, Oak Construction Company focuses heavily on tailored residential transformations like custom ADUs and kitchen remodels.
I like that they handle projects of all sizes, ensuring a customized approach for a simple bathroom update or a full home addition. They’re a fantastic option for homeowners who want a personal touch and specific expertise in maximizing living space.
They offer a free 30-minute consultation to get the ball rolling, which is a nice touch for homeowners who are still in the planning phase.
Just remember that once you get past that first free chat, they do charge mandatory booking fees for more advanced service planning. These fees range from $99 to $199, depending on the session depth.
After the crew finishes your kitchen, hiring professional cleaning services in San Diego is the best way to handle the final dust-down.
