Captain Decks is a great choice for homeowners who care about sustainable outdoor living without sacrificing aesthetics. Their use of eco-friendly recycled plastic decking is a smart long-term choice
We especially like their framing technique that hides exposed board ends because it gives the finished deck a much cleaner look.
Another thing that adds reassurance is their certified Master Installer status for major brands, which allows them to provide manufacturer-backed 25-year warranties.
We also recently spoke with a homeowner who hired them for a custom pergola. She was genuinely impressed by how naturally the structure blended into their hillside property.
The downside is that their workload across the county can sometimes slow down quote scheduling.
They also seem much more focused on premium new builds than smaller repair jobs.
Still, their strict adherence to California building codes makes the overall service feel reliable and professionally handled.

West Coast Deck seems especially well-suited for coastal properties where moisture and salt air can quickly damage outdoor structures.
The team has a strong focus on deck waterproofing and decorative coatings, which is essential if you want a deck that actually holds up long-term near the coast.
They’ve also been operating across Southern California for more than 30 years, so they’re quite knowledgeable about the area.
We also like that they offer steel framing options for added fire resistance and durability compared to traditional lumber.
Another practical advantage is that their team handles blueprints and permit processing, which can remove a lot of stress for homeowners and property managers.
That said, because they operate on a larger regional scale, the experience may feel less personal than working with a smaller neighborhood contractor.

If you are needing a new deck in San Diego, I can’t recommend Jameson and his team at West Coast Deck more highly! The communication is EXCELLENT, the prices are extremely fair, and more than anything the end product is STUNNING. You can completely trust that these guys will knock it out of the park (and they’re Padres fans too which is always a plus!)
If you are looking for a deck building company in La Jolla, give these guys a call!!! Thanks again.

West Coast Deck saved the day. After looking for months for a deck contractor I finally found one that met my standards. If you’re looking for a premium custom deck that is built to last, please call West Coast Deck
They helped me build my Ipê hardwood deck for my ADU in Solana Beach. We also added a stainless cable railing to it.
Overall could not be happier to recommend to you West Coast Deck

San Diego Decks & Patios really shine when it comes to handling the complicated side of outdoor construction, especially local permits and building regulations. That alone can remove a huge amount of stress for homeowners planning upgrades.
What we also like is that their approach is more like full backyard planning. They combine patio covers, fencing, and deck construction into one cohesive design instead of treating everything as separate projects.
I actually reached out to them last year about a small patio resurfacing project, and their communication stood out immediately. The planning process felt very transparent and organized, and their reported 93% on-time completion rate definitely added confidence.
They also offer dedicated repair services, unlike many hardscaping companies.
The main drawback is that their service area is very localized, so flexibility outside nearby areas may be limited. Material delays can also occasionally extend project timelines.
Customer Reviews
Bernard and his team did a great job designing and building a deck, a fence, two gates, a pergola, a trellis, and a “corral” for the trash cans, and the back yard looks so much more finished than it did before. They were always on time, worked hard, and cleaned up thoroughly. In addition they are a very pleasant group of people.

4. John Martin Construction

John Martin Construction is a strong fit for homeowners who want a deck or outdoor extension that’s carefully engineered rather than built from a standard template.
What stands out to us is the owner’s engineering background. This seems to influence the entire process from custom design planning to structural execution.
We also like how involved they stay throughout the project. That continuous owner interaction gives the impression of tighter quality control and a more hands-on experience than you usually get with larger contractors.
Their manufacturer-certified status is another plus, especially for clients looking for premium waterproof surfaces backed by solid warranties.
That said, their boutique approach does come with trade-offs. Lead times can stretch during busy seasons because they intentionally keep project capacity limited.
They also seem heavily focused on premium materials and larger custom builds, so they may not be the best fit for homeowners simply looking for low-cost repairs or quick patchwork solutions.
Customer Reviews
I had a great experience working with John Martin Construction! He replaced old decking at my home. John went over all the details of the job and I appreciated his expertise in deciding the product and design of the decking. I appreciated his professionalism and attention to details. He completed the job in the estimated timeframe that he said he would. He completed the work efficiently and communicated with me throughout the job. I would definitely hire John Martin Contracting for future projects!

Very professional, quick, effective and high quality. John is very easy to work with, attentive to detail and efficient on the job site. He built a custom deck for us around our (kind of awkwardly shaped) rock formation hot tub, and did a wonderful job. Lighting inlays and all. Beautiful work, beautiful job 10/10 would recommend to a friend or loved one!

5. California Deck Pros

Website:http://californiadeckpros.com/
Address: 13805 Woods Valley Ct, Valley Center, CA 92082
Contact: (760) 522-1416
Hours: Monday – Friday: 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM | Saturday: 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM
California Deck Pros really seems built for challenging properties, especially hillside or coastal homes where structural stability becomes a much bigger concern.
We really like their specialized engineering approach. They have a framing system that’s designed to improve airflow and reduce moisture buildup underneath the structure, which is particularly important near the coast.
We also like that they provide 3D design previews before construction starts. Being able to visualize the finished layout in advance probably makes large outdoor projects much less risky and easier to plan around.
Their Trex Platinum and Azek Gold Pro certifications also suggest a strong track record with premium decking materials and higher-end installations.
The main downside is definitely cost. With projects starting around $15,000, they clearly cater more to luxury outdoor builds than smaller repair jobs or budget-friendly upgrades.
And because they cover multiple counties, availability for smaller follow-up work may sometimes be limited.
Customer Reviews
Excellent workmanship. They built our pool deck and stairs. They worked with us on the details, even installing some tiles my wife asked for after they started the job. Arrived proptly and conducted themselves in a professional mannor. They consulted with us before major work was done and even adjusted their schedual so the kids could put their hand prints in the concrete.

Blake did a great job replacing an old rotted deck and replaced it with a custom redwood design that still looks brand new! Very professional crew that demolished the old deck; dug and poured new larger footings; erected the structure and finished it off with a detailed redwood handrail with spindles. Finished on time and was very fair with price. I‘d hire him again without question, Blake was very reliable! Definitely 5-stars!
