Here’s a little food fact I came across: pasta was once commonly eaten by hand before forks became widely used in Italy.
Messy? Absolutely. But honestly, it proves people have always taken their pasta cravings seriously. These days, I’ll happily use a fork, though I still understand the urgency of finding a good Italian meal the moment the craving hits.
When it comes to Italian restaurants in San Diego, there’s no shortage of options, which somehow makes choosing one even harder.
That’s exactly why I put together this curated list, featuring everything from cozy pasta spots to restaurants serving wood-fired pizza and classic Italian comfort food. With this guide, you can dig in with a little more confidence and a lot less guesswork.
1. Piacere Mio

Address: 1947 Fern St, CA 92102
Contact Details: +16197942543
Operating Hours:
- Monday-Thursday: 4:00 PM – 10:00 PM
- Friday-Saturday: 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM, 4:30 PM – 10:30 PM
- Sunday: 11:30 AM – 2:30 PM, 4:30 PM – 9:30 PM
Piacere Mio’s homemade pasta is the clearest reason to visit. Open since 2013, this South Park restaurant focuses on fresh semolina-and-egg pasta made in-house, including fettuccine, ravioli, and other classics.
The menu also reflects co-owner Stefano Poletti’s Italian roots. His family has operated a restaurant in Italy for three generations, which shows in regional dishes like Melanzane alla Parmigiana and Northern Italian Lamb Shank.
I also like the build-your-own pasta option, which lets guests choose their pasta, sauce, and protein instead of relying on preset combinations. Vegetarian and gluten-free dishes are clearly labeled as well.
The downside is that the menu is heavily pasta-focused, so diners looking for a wider pizza selection may find the options limited.
Nonetheless, it’s nice that Piacere Mio also offers catering and private event packages with customizable menus, making it a solid choice for group celebrations.
Dishes were solid
“We were looking for some nice Italian food and ordered it from Doordash. We ended up ordering Orecchiette Con Salsiccia, Ravioli Di Carne Al Funghi, Pollo Alla Parmigiana and Spaghetti Carbonara. My favorite was the Orecchiette Con Salsiccia, the taste of the sausage and sauce were top tier. Overall all of the dishes were solid and would recommend going here if you’re looking for some nice italian food.”

Food was excellent
“Lovely homey Italian restaurant we had two appetizers octopus and calamari. And our entries were fruiti de mare, Spaghetti bolognese and lamb with mushroom pasta… finished with a tiramisu. The food was excellent and the meal thoroughly enjoyable! Highly recommended”

2. Fortuna Ristorante Italiano

Address: 4207 Park Blvd, CA 92103
Contact Details: +16193105739
Operating Hours:
- Monday-Thursday: 4:30 PM – 9:30 PM
- Friday: 4:00 PM – 10:00 PM
- Saturday: 11:30 AM – 10:00 PM
- Sunday: 11:30 AM – 9:00 PM
Fortuna San Diego stands out among Italian restaurants for its focus on heritage and dietary flexibility.
Founded by three Italian immigrants—Giuseppe, Gabriele, and Salvatore—the restaurant draws on family recipes and traditional Italian cooking passed down through generations.
One of its strongest features is the dedicated vegan menu. Instead of basic side options, it offers full plant-based Italian dishes like Penne Arrabbiata and Rigatoni dell’Orto.
It also includes Risotto ai Porcini Vegano, which adds a more substantial option for vegan diners looking for a proper restaurant-style meal.
Fortuna keeps its regular menu, vegan menu, drinks, and reservations clearly separated online, making it easy to compare options before booking.
The main drawback is the limited detail on ingredients and preparation, which may require diners with stricter dietary needs to call ahead.
Incredibly delicious
“My husband and I consider this the best Italian spot in San Diego. This was already our 6th visit! The Artichoke is incredibly delicious and a must-try. We’ve tried various pasta dishes, and they never disappoint. Also, the Salmon was cooked to perfection—so tender and flavorful. If you’re looking for authentic and high-quality Italian food, this is the place!”

Excellent Italian food
“Excellent Italian food. Authentic and clean. Service is excellent and their varieties of amazing dishes makes this place enjoyable for the whole family. Their desserts are fantastic. Canole, tiramisu and panacota are freshly made with tasty ingredients. I highly recommend !”

3. Buon Appetito Restaurant

Address: 1609 India St, CA 92101
Contact Details: +16192389880
Operating Hours:
- Monday-Thursday, Sunday: 12:00 PM – 10:30 PM
- Friday-Saturday: 12:00 PM – 10:30 PM
According to its own story, Buon Appetito has been part of San Diego’s Little Italy dining scene since June 2003.
It was founded by 3 experienced restaurant owners, Daniela, Salvatore, and Antonino. Together, they bring more than 60 years of combined hospitality experience.
That background gives the restaurant a strong family-style identity. Its cooking is shaped by family recipes and “Mama’s Kitchen” training. Because of that, the food feels warmer and more rustic instead of overly trend-focused.
I also like that the restaurant adds local character to the dining room. The walls feature work from San Diego artists, and the artwork changes every quarter. This small detail makes the space feel more connected to the neighborhood.
Beyond regular meals, Buon Appetito is also practical for group dining. It offers private and semi-private events for 20 to 100 guests, including birthdays, rehearsal dinners, corporate meals, and many more.
However, one drawback is that the event service is built around groups of 20 to 100 guests. Smaller private gatherings are not clearly accommodated.
Enjoyed the gluten-free and vegan ravioli
“I come here for one item: gluten free and vegan ravioli! It’s so delicious. My husband loves the gluten free gnocchi. This was our last meal in San Diego when we visited for the first time last year, and it was our first meal here on our second visit because we loved it so much! It’s hard to find delicious gluten free pasta in the south where we live, so this is truly a treat for us. We also enjoyed a fresh house salad this time which was also great. Tossed in just the right amount of dressing. The server assured me it did not have dairy in the dressing. Our server was wonderful. We enjoyed eating outside our first visit and inside the second. We highly recommend!”

Good and reasonably priced food
“The food here is good and reasonably priced. I personally was not a fan of the lasagna (it tasted too sweet) but the Cannelloni was delicious! The layout is not ideal and felt crowded while dining and service was very slow. We waited so long for our dinner we were full from appetizers and tired so had to take our mains to go. It took an uncharacteristically long time to receive a check in after the meals were dropped and then we had an additional long wait of approximately 15 minutes to get boxes and the check.”

4. Romanissimo Cucina Italiana

Address: 644 Fifth Ave, CA 92101
Contact Details: +16195259990
Operating Hours:
- Monday-Wednesday, Sunday: 4:00 PM – 10:00 PM
- Thursday: 4:00 PM – 10:15 PM
- Friday-Saturday: 4:00 PM – 11:00 PM
I also made sure to look closely at Romanissimo. Its Roman-style focus gives diners a clearer idea of what to expect before booking.
Instead of a broad Italian menu with no direction, the restaurant highlights fresh pasta made daily with imported Italian flour and sauces built from scratch.
It does not stop at pasta, either. Romanissimo also features signature oxtail meatballs and Roman-style pinsa. These dishes make the menu easier to remember because they are more specific than the usual spaghetti-and-pizza lineup.
What also makes Romanissimo practical is its nightly happy hour from 4 to 6 PM. Since the deal is available throughout the restaurant and patio, diners are not limited to bar seating just to save on early evening orders.
Additionally, the restaurant supports fuller dining plans with an Italian wine list, handcrafted cocktails, private dining, and $12 parking validation for 3 hours. That parking deal helps in the Gaslamp area, where parking can quickly add to the final cost.
However, the parking validation only covers 3 hours. Longer dinners or private events can still lead to extra parking charges.
The restaurant itself was cute
“The restaurant itself was so cute! I loved the decor for Valentine’s Day! However, you can tell they wanted to fill it up as much possible. It was very cramped and the small table did not have enough room for two people to dine. We were all cramped inside like a bunch of sardines haha, it was crowded but also kinda impressive how they made it work. Nonetheless, I give it 4 stars because for the price there are other Italian restaurants in the area that I’d recommend with more delicious food at this price. And no, the portions are not big like other people stated. It’s pretty small for the price”

Incredible service
“Food was delicious. We got the traditional carbonara (which is hard to find at most restaurants) and the beef short rib lasagna. We both got a glass of wine, and although the moscato wasn’t my favorite, they did an incredible job and switched it out for a Chardonnay. We finished off our dinner with a shot of limoncello which was thick and smooth. Thank you Francisco and team for incredible service.”

5. Baci Restaurant | Italian

Address: 1955 Morena Blvd, CA 92110
Contact Details: +16192752094
Operating Hours:
- Tuesday-Wednesday: 5:00 PM – 9:30 PM
- Thursday: 11:30 AM – 2:00 PM, 5:00 PM – 9:30 PM
- Friday: 11:30 AM – 2:00 PM, 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM
- Saturday: 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM
- Sunday-Monday: Closed
Walking into Baci Ristorante feels like stepping into one of San Diego’s old-school Italian dining rooms. Open since 1979, it was founded by Sicilian restaurateur Antonio “Tony” D’Amato. He started in the restaurant industry after arriving from Sicily at age 16.
I love that the restaurant still keeps an owner-hosted feel. The website notes that Tony is at the door every night with his wife, Maria. That detail makes the experience feel more personal, not just like another polished table-service setup.
I also like that the menu gives diners clear reasons to book for a fuller dinner.
Seafood is one of its strongest points, with the site specifically praising chef Mimo’s fish dishes. That makes dishes like Chilean Sea Bass more central to Baci’s appeal, while plates like Pappardelle with Lamb Ragu add a richer option.
They also handle group dining with set menus priced at $85, $110, and $130 per guest. However, the practical downside is the cost of group dining. At those rates, a large party can become expensive quickly before drinks, tax, or tip are added.
Service was phenomenal
“Had a lovely dinner with my husband 💕. We each had a special for the night & we were not disappointed. The service was fenomenal & the atmosphere was quiet & romántico.”
- Maria D. Gaspar-Casillas, Google Review
All very nice and tasty
“We went to Baci last night and it was a great restaurant. It’s simple inside, nothing modern or trendy – but indeed formal. The food and service were great! I got the salmon piccata, homemade pasta bolognese and burrata appetizer. All very nice and tasty and fresh. It’s a pricey restaurant and our server was wonderful.“
