Share small plate meals with the best tapas in San Diego

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

  • Ingredient Authenticity: I checked if the kitchens use traditional elements like real Spanish olive oil or imported cheeses. True flavors depend entirely on high-quality sourcing rather than shortcuts.

  • Atmosphere and Ambiance: Tapas dining is inherently social, so the environment needs to feel lively and welcoming. A great spot should offer a comfortable space that works for groups or date nights.

  • Menu Variety: A solid lineup needs plenty of hot and cold small plates to keep things interesting. Having distinct choices across seafood, meats, and vegetarian items is a must.

  • Value and Sizing: Smaller plates should still offer a satisfying bite for what you pay. I looked at the balance between the portion sizes and the prices on the menu.

Hunting down the best tapas in San Diego is a fantastic way to enjoy a night out with friends or plan a memorable date night. The city’s food scene is bursting with incredible small plates that make sharing a meal feel like a party.

If you’re planning a massive celebration, you might look into local catering options, or maybe hit up some nearby breweries before dinner. But for an intimate, flavor-packed evening, nothing beats sharing a bunch of traditional and modern Spanish small plates.

Here are my absolute favorite spots in town that nail the experience.

How much do tapas cost in San Diego?

You can expect to spend anywhere from $12 to $30 per small plate when dining out at tapas spots in San Diego.

1. Cafe Sevilla of San Diego

cafe-sevilla-of-san-diego

Website: https://www.cafesevilla.com/

Address: 353 Fifth Ave, San Diego, CA 92101

Contact: (619) 233-5979

Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 4:30 PM – 1:30 AM; Wednesday 4:30 PM – 1:30 AM; Saturday 4:00 PM – 1:30 AM; Sunday 3:30 PM – 1:30 AM

Finding a vibrant downtown spot that delivers an authentic Spanish dining and entertainment experience under one roof is a total win. Cafe Sevilla of San Diego offers the longest-running flamenco dinner show in Southern California, pairing professional dancing with a massive lineup of over 30 traditional small plates.

The energy here is always buzzing, especially with live music filling the room late into the evening.

The bacon-wrapped dates and sizzling garlic shrimp are great for sharing with a group of friends.

But the dining room gets incredibly crowded during peak weekend hours, which sometimes causes the food to arrive a bit lukewarm.

Still, the late-night kitchen hours make it an excellent choice for night owls who crave authentic flavors long after normal dinner hours have ended.

Pros

  • Over 30 different tapas choices
  • Nightly live music and dancing
  • Authentic Spanish cultural vibe
  • Kitchen stays open late

Cons

  • Food is sometimes served lukewarm
  • Long wait times during busy shows
  • Inconsistent staff responsiveness
  • Crowded weekend seating logistics

Outstanding

I was attending a conference in San Diego and I met two colleagues for dinner at this place in the gaslamp district. The decor is very beautiful and traditional Spanish. We ordered Tapas to share as well as a traditional paella, which was outstanding. The octopus (pulpo) was fabulous, as were the croquetas and albondigas (meatballs). Outstanding food all around, just as good as in Spain where I visited recently. Our server was friendly and helpful. Oh, and we had the sangria which was great. No complaints. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone who likes Spanish food.

Food was very good and served quickly

Visited for Tapas with friends on a Tuesday evening. I recommend dinner reservations especially when a conference is in town. Service was excellent, food was very good and served quickly but we didn’t feel rushed. There was indoor and outdoor seating, plus a quieter room upstairs, maybe for large groups. The bathroom is upstairs, but there is an elevator if needed.

2. Costa Brava

Address: 1653 Garnet Ave, San Diego, CA 92109

Hours: Wednesday to Thursday 5:00 PM – 11:00 PM; Friday to Sunday 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM

Tucking into a cozy, rustic neighborhood oasis in the heart of Pacific Beach offers a truly transportive Spanish dining experience. Costa Brava beautifully blends traditional Spanish cuisine with modern culinary creativity on a menu packed with Mediterranean-inspired small plates.

It’s a beautiful spot to escape the standard beach bar scene and enjoy communal dining.

My server guided me through their curated wine program, recommending a perfect glass of Tempranillo that paired wonderfully with the imported cheeses.

The warm hospitality and rich guitar melodies make it a fantastic destination for an intimate date night.

However, managing the wine inventory seems to be a slight weak point since a bottle we ordered had a badly deteriorated cork.

Pros

  • Large selection of classic tapas
  • Live flamenco guitar performances
  • Cozy rustic beach neighborhood vibe
  • Excellent happy hour sangria deals

Cons

  • Inconsistent customer service response
  • Occasional wine quality control issues
  • Limited resolution for order disputes
  • Facility maintenance needs improvement

They were very tasty

Gustavo took care of us at the bar and was incredible. He recommended we try 6 of his favorite tapas and they were very tasty. The bottle of wine he recommended was also exactly what we were looking for. The whole staff was incredibly friendly and made the place feel like home, 10/10 experience and highly recommend to anyone looking for great food, atmosphere, and a place that feels like you’re being served by your own family!

Great tapas-style food

Great tapas style food. The pimientos and papayas braves were great as was the sausage. Drinks are generous pours! I would go again. Parked across the street in the strip mall parking lot. Easy to get in and out.

3. Tapas & Beers | French and Spanish Restaurant

Website: https://www.tapasbeers.com/

Address: 926 Broadway Circle, San Diego, CA 92101

Contact: (619) 564-7255

Hours: Tuesday to Thursday 11:30 AM – 8:00 PM; Friday 11:30 AM – 10:00 PM; Saturday 4:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Skipping the standard single-country menus for an authentic French and Spanish tapas experience in downtown San Diego brings a unique twist to your plate. Tapas & Beers stands out because everything is made entirely from scratch using fresh, mostly organic ingredients.

The clever fusion of two distinct European culinary cultures means your table gets a much wider variety of flavors than a typical Spanish bar.

Craft beer lovers will appreciate the extensive tap list featuring local microbreweries, which makes pairing your small plates a lot of fun.

On the downside, the heavy French influence might disappoint purists looking exclusively for standard Spanish food, and the small portion sizes feel slightly expensive. But the highly personal hospitality from the hands-on owners makes the entire evening feel special.

Pros

  • Unique French and Spanish fusion
  • Scratch-made organic ingredients
  • Around 20 local craft beers
  • Personal owner-operated hospitality

Cons

  • Small portion sizes for the price
  • Heavy French influence on the menu
  • Limited staff during peak times
  • Flavors can lean too sweet

Good service, good food

Great place with Tapas and entrees. Indoor and outdoor seating. Loft like area 4 events with 20 or fewer people I would imagine. Good service, good food. I had the pulled pork with pineapple and teriyaki as well as ahi tuna candies who h I would give a 5/

This is that place

Google sent me here when I searched for tapas. I was fortunate to be served by the owner. What a kind and pleasant soul, he was. The restaurant is very lovely. But, the food? DELICIOUS. At first, I wished it was closer to the downtown area near the stadium for him to get more “action”. But then I realized that would take away from the ambience of his restaurant. I want to be relaxed to enjoy a great meal and this is that place.

4. Barra Oliba

barra-oliba

Website: https://barraoliba.com/

Address: 1980 Kettner Blvd #30, San Diego, CA 92101

Contact: +1 619-310-5110

Hours: Wednesday to Friday 4:00 PM – 10:00 PM; Saturday 1:00 PM – 10:00 PM; Sunday 2:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Diving into an elevated tapas and seafood program with a modern presentation makes this Little Italy gem a standout for upscale dining. Barra Oliba strictly follows an ingredient-driven philosophy, using premium sourcing like dry-aged fish, wagyu beef, and Spanish extra-virgin olive oil while completely avoiding seed oils.

I spoke directly with a regular diner who raved about how the chefs cook exclusively with traditional animal fats and house-made broths.

The sophisticated ambiance is absolutely perfect for a romantic evening or a high-end social gathering.

However, you should look out for the premium pricing, as the small plates and wine pours can add up very quickly on your final bill. Also, some of the larger rice entrees do not quite match the stellar quality of the small plates.

Pros

  • High-quality premium ingredient sourcing
  • No seed oils used in cooking
  • Terroir-focused European wine list
  • Chic design-driven atmosphere

Cons

  • Premium pricing on small portions
  • Larger entrees can be inconsistent
  • Service can feel overly pushy
  • Added group charges on bills

Will be back

Tried out Barra Oliba for the first time tonight with a friend. Did tapas and wine. The wine was excellent. We had a white wine called Abadia Retuerta that was so good. I recommend the papas bravas, the sashimi, the jambon and cheeses. Juan was an amazing server and gave us phenomenal recommendations. Will be back.

It was delicious

We had a lovely meal here! Shared about 5 tapas together and finished off the meal with their olive oil ice cream made in-house. It was delicious. Everything we had was a phenomenal bite. Great addition to the Little Italy scene. Can’t wait to come in again and dine inside next time around.

Monday to Friday 7:30 AM – 1:45 PM (Breakfast)

Monday to Thursday 5:00 PM –9:00 AM, Friday 5:00 PM – 12:00 AM (Bar)

Combining a hip Spanish tapas bar with a dedicated vinyl record listening experience creates an entirely new vibe on Adams Avenue. Nómade Tapas and Records stands out by putting music curation first, spinning records to shape a truly immersive evening.

The contemporary interpretation of classic small plates breathes fresh energy into the local urban nightlife scene.

It’s an incredible spot for a group hangout if you want something highly creative and design-forward.

On the downside, the kitchen struggles with consistency, and we noticed some dishes were served with slightly burnt bread or tough meats. The portions are also quite tiny for the price, so you will need to order quite a few plates to leave full.

Pros

  • Unique vinyl record listening lounge
  • Trendy design-forward social vibe
  • Modern twists on small plates
  • Fun urban nightlife alternative

Cons

  • Tiny portion sizes for price
  • Preparation and cooking inconsistencies
  • Slow service during busy hours
  • Limited by-the-glass wine options

The food and drinks are very well put together

Mid-century vibe, with the vinyl records, playing in the background, and the warm wood tones in the decor makes this coffee and food joint feel groovy! The food and drinks are very well put together, so this makes it a must visit place on Adams Ave. I’ll be back on an evening when Tapas are being served and a cool DJ is spinning some cool tunes!
