1. University Care Center

Website: http://www.universitycarecenter.com/
Address: 5602 University Avenue, San Diego, CA
Contact: (619) 583-1993
Hours:
- Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM
- Saturday to Sunday: 9:00 AM – 6:30 PM
University Care Center offers 24-hour admission and recovery support in a setting that’s built around both rehabilitation and day-to-day safety.
We like that licensed medical professionals are on-site around the clock, and patients can work on recovery in a large rehab gym with structured guidance.
The private rooms are also comfortable, providing residents with space to rest. Meanwhile, the outdoor courtyards make it easier for families to visit in a more relaxed environment.
That said, the overall atmosphere feels pretty active and busy. There’s a lot of constant staff movement, which makes sense for a facility like this, but it might not be ideal for someone who prefers a quieter or lower-stimulation recovery setting.
Customer Reviews:
Good experience
Great skilled nursing place to visit. My family member had a good experience here during recovery. They worked with the rehab team who were very encouraging and helped get them strong enough to come home. The nurses are friendly every time I visited and the room was cleaned frequently. Very great facility, I would recommend!

I have been a patient here for a little over a year. All the staff here has treated me really well while I have been here. I see them as family now. All the CNAs take care of me when I am down. I am doing therapy and all the therapists have been amazing. I haven’t really had any issues in the time I have been here. Everyone always does what I ask right away. I am very satisfied with my stay here and I would recommend this place to anyone that needs care.

2. The Springs at Pacific Regent La Jolla

Website: http://www.sprlj.com/
Address: 3884 Nobel Drive, La Jolla, CA 92122-5700
Contact: (858) 625-8700
Hours: Hours may vary
The Springs at Pacific Regent La Jolla focuses on highly personalized in-house therapy plans, especially for residents who need memory and cognitive support.
We like that their care approach is tailored to each individual, particularly for conditions like Alzheimer’s. One family member we spoke with shared that the team even takes personal history into account when building those plans.
They also seem very collaborative, with care plans shaped through meetings that include input from family members.
Another thing we found helpful is that they outline a discharge strategy right from admission, so there’s a clearer idea of the path back home.
Plus, frontline caregivers get a direct voice in daily operational decisions.
But the strong programmatic focus on dementia care means the daily structure may be overly restrictive. The environment is simply not ideal for someone who only needs short-term physical rehabilitation without cognitive care needs.
Customer Reviews:

They do a great job with communication and make the process easy for families. I highly recommend this facility for anyone looking for quality care here in San Diego!

Good facility, commendable staff
Beautiful facility with fantastic staff. Social activities are offered throughout the day (bingo, cooking, etc). The staff will allow visitors to bring dogs to visit if they bring current proof of rabies vaccine. Super responsive and helpful staff. The roo. I saw was a double with an impressively large bathroom. Visitors check in and out at the front desk. There is (free) valet parking for visitors. I heard the meals were good but there was not a meal choice. The first thing I noticed was the lack of smell – no urine smell or pine sol smell.

Arroyo Vista Nursing Center provides tailored physical and cognitive rehabilitation driven by a specialized interdisciplinary team and detailed personal background assessments.
They also draw on a comprehensive inventory of a patient’s daily life history to customize therapeutic approaches.
Plus, dedicated care plan meetings are coordinated within the first two weeks to align medical goals with family expectations.
On top of that, therapy spaces are equipped with specialized physical equipment to support complex recovery requirements.
Additionally, involved family members receive continuous updates to help them adapt care strategies over time.
That said, the highly structured schedule and rigorous therapy routines may be physically and mentally exhausting. It can feel overwhelming for residents who require a slower, more relaxed pace of recovery.

4. Balboa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

Website: https://balboahc.com/
Address: 3520 Fourth Ave., San Diego, CA
Contact: (619) 291-5270
Hours: 24 Hours
Balboa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center offers dedicated rehabilitation services supported by a highly structured leadership team and robust, continuous admission assistance.
During our visit, we observed how care is systematically organized through distinct departments such as therapy and dietary teams.
In addition, they operate a separate, dedicated support line to assist incoming patients with the admissions process at any hour.
At the same time, the facility functions under the direct oversight of a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator to maintain standardized procedures, while tailored social activities and targeted environmental services are also incorporated to support daily living in a structured setting.
That said, the strict division of care into separate departments could potentially lead to a fragmented daily experience. That’s tough for residents whose needs closely overlap multiple areas.
Customer Reviews:

5. Bayshire Torrey Pines

Website: https://bayshiretorreypines.com/
Address: 13101 Hartfield Ave, San Diego, CA 92130
Contact: (858) 358-3862
Hours: 24 Hours
Bayshire Torrey Pines offers a pretty seamless continuum of care, which we like because it means residents can move between different levels of support without having to relocate.
They also bring in mobile services like physicians, podiatry, and dental care directly on-site. This makes day-to-day healthcare much more convenient.
The environment itself seems thoughtfully designed, with outdoor gardens, sunrooms, and verandas that encourage residents to spend time outside and stay active. We also like that it’s pet-friendly, since that can really improve emotional well-being for many people.
On top of that, there’s 24-hour security across the property, which adds an extra layer of safety.
Just note that securing a spot requires placing a deposit immediately after touring. That kind of upfront financial commitment can feel a bit rushed for families who want more time to decide.
Customer Reviews:
10 stars
My grandfather was at Torrey Pines for skilled nursing after a fall. I loved to visit him there. That grumpy old man was the happiest I’ve ever seen him during his stay. He absolutely loved his therapist Amanda, as did I. I always could tell a difference in him when he had worked with her that day. I would give 10 stars if I could!
