One of my colleagues was prepping a backyard for a branded summer party. I was there a week before and saw lots of lights and decor. However, one leaning tree was ruining the whole vibe (and safety).
At first, she tried trimming the tree a little bit herself. But honestly, that only made it worse. There were branches everywhere, and the tree was still unstable. They even had to call a pool cleaner because there were too many dispersed leaves.
Desperate, she asked me for help since I’m used to sourcing various event vendors. To eliminate the problem itself, I started researching tree removal services in San Diego and compared their speed, equipment, and post-work cleanup.
So if you are also dealing with risky trees in your yard, feel free to check out our shortlist.
How much do tree removal services cost in San Diego?
Tree removal services in San Diego typically cost between $500 and $1,500, depending on the tree species and condition, location, accessibility, and local regulations.
1. Tree Service San Diego

Address: 5187 San Aquario Dr
Contact Details:

Business Hours:
- Open 24/7
Tree Service San Diego is a no-frills, full-service tree crew that covers almost everything you might need: removals, trimming, stump work, and more.
We find it handy that they emphasize same-job multitasking. They can finish everything in one visit, saving everyone time and other resources.
It’s also impressive to us that the owner values direct involvement. He often works alongside the crew rather than just sending a separate team.
Their tree trimming and pruning range from $478 to $710 each. Meanwhile, small tree removals (up to 30 ft) are priced at $200 to $500, medium tree removals (30 to 60 ft) at $450 to $1,000, and large tree removals (over 60 ft) at $1,000 to over $2,200.
We reckon these rates are reasonable, as they often match lower competitive quotes. The team is known for its thorough cleanup as well, adding value to these costs.
However, someone we interviewed told us that one arborist failed to show up for a follow-up work. While inevitable things happen, we think the company should still work on its communication to inform clients of any issues beforehand.
On time and communicative for a great price
“I was definitely nervous hiring a new company after having a not great experience in the past with a different company, but Tree Service San Diego was awesome. They took care of my tree, were on time and communicative and for a great price. Thank you so much for your help! Will definitely use them again if I ever need tree removal in the future.”

Professional, efficient, and incredibly skilled
“I recently hired Tree Service San Diego for a tree removal project at my property, and I couldn’t be happier with their service! From start to finish, they were professional, efficient, and incredibly skilled. The team arrived on time, assessed the situation with care, and safely removed a large, hazardous tree without any issues. Their equipment was top-notch, and they took great care to protect my yard and surrounding structures during the process. What stood out most was their excellent communication. They explained the entire process, provided a fair and transparent quote, and answered all my questions with patience. The crew was courteous, worked diligently, and left my property spotless after the job was done. Their attention to detail and commitment to safety gave me complete peace of mind.I highly recommend Tree Service San Diego for anyone needing tree removal services. They’re reliable, affordable, and truly experts in their field. I’ll definitely be calling them again for any future tree care needs! Five stars!”

2. Ocean Beach Arborists

Business Hours:
- Open 24/7
Ocean Beach Arborists is a small tree care company focused on careful, health-based pruning and full-service work.
They are led by Justin Coppola, who’s an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA)- certified and licensed arborist. This reassures clients that they follow national tree-care standards and are allowed to cut and remove trees in California.
In addition, we appreciate that they stress tree health over just topping or hacking branches off. They even specialize in lacing, a pruning style that lets light and air through the canopy without ruining the tree’s natural shape.
For us, these things set them apart from cheaper outfits that will lop off the top third and call it a day.
This service provider also charges competitive rates compared to other certified pros in San Diego. Pruning and lacing are priced around $400 to $600 for specialized work, while tree removal is priced at $250 to over $1,200 with thorough cleanup.
But as they have a small crew, note that they can have a longer backlog of jobs during busy seasons compared to massive fleet companies.
Fast and professional at a reasonable cost
“OB Arborists provided fast, professional tree and stump removal for a reasonable cost. The team was skilled and hardworking, but at the same time concerned about doing a good job and not rushed. I was very happy about the project and intend to use them for any future tree work.”

Business Hours:
- Mon-Fri: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm

SavATree is a big, full-service tree-care company that leans heavily on science-based, certified arborist work for both homes and businesses.
They have been around nationally for over 4 decades as well, so they already know what they are doing.
We also appreciate that they prioritize tree health, risk reduction, and long-term stewardship, instead of just quick cuts and removals.
Many clients we spoke with say that their quotes are professionally detailed and accurate too. Yet, their rates are still often notably higher than local chop-and-go competitors.
For a dying tree, one could get a quote for around $1,200. Moreover, expect to pay at the higher end of the San Diego average ($400 to $1,200) for professional lacing and health-based pruning.
Alongside that, someone mentioned a staff member here who tends to upsell. Our advice is to be cautious, especially toward their pricey add-on treatments and long-term health plans.
Very knowledgeable, professional, and communicative
“I had a couple of palm trees in my front yard that had some type of disease. I tried calling a couple of other arborists to help me but none were available. Victir responded immediately to my call and came out that day. He was able to diagnose my problem and was very knowledgeable and professional! I ended up having to remove the trees. He was great about giving me options and prices. Thank you for being available and very communicative.”

Mission accomplished, thanks to their excellent service
“I returned to Coastal Tree Care to prune trees (Sweet Gums and an Ornamental Pear Tree) to remove dead branches and improve the shape and balance. Mission accomplished thanks to the excellent service provided by Sarah in the office, Justin the arborist and Brian and Miguel who did the pruning. These people know and care about what they do. How they approach and do their work makes me know I made the right choice”

Business Hours:
- Open 24/7
Love Branch Tree & Yard is a small, local-style tree and yard care company known for being fast, affordable, and flexible.
If you are pressed for time, we believe their same-day or 24 to 48-hour service for removals, trimming, and yard cleanups would be ideal.
They are also fully insured and guaranteed for their work. For us, this is convenient for people who need a hazardous tree taken down quickly.
Other than that, these pros are fire and insurance compliance specialists. They are skilled in hillside cleaning and weed reduction, specifically to meet Homeowners Association (HOA) and insurance regulations.
As for their rates, we find them a budget-friendly and highly flexible alternative to larger corporations. Their tree trimming can go from $40 to $75 per hour, while a small tree removal (under 30 ft) can cost around $200 to $500.
However, their specialist equipment remains limited. This may make them a less suitable choice for large-scale, 100-foot technical removals that require heavy crane work.
So friendly and did an amazing job
“Joel was awesome! He responded within an hour of me filling out his online form, was available the next day to come and take a look, then came out the day after to do the work. He was so friendly and did an amazing job. We had him weed whack our entire back lot, trim some trees, remove some stumps, and remove other debris from our yard. We will be calling him again when we are ready for the next phase of our yard work. Thank you Joel!”
-Giulia Longo, Google Review
Completed all of the work ahead of schedule and at a fair price
“I’ve used Joel and his crew to remove trees over the past few years and when it came time to update the backyard, I searched to find him again. This time the work was more complex, but Joel mobilized a team to help remove the trees, trench as needed and completed all of the work ahead of schedule and at a fair price.”

Business Hours:
- Mon-Fri: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm

The Davey Tree Expert Company is a big, national-style tree care company with a long history and a full-service menu for both homes and businesses.
Their track record stretches back to 1880, which is older and more experienced than almost any local San Diego-only operator.
Moreover, we are impressed that they highlight ISA-certified arborists on the ground. This means they have real training in tree biology, safety, and risk assessment, instead of just facility-level pruning.
We love that they push for eco-friendly and science-driven approaches too. For one, they use research-based diagnostics, plant health care, and even subsurface watering to help trees survive drought and stress.
They also offer a wide range, depending on the scale. This goes from $300 to $400 for minor trimming to $1,200 to over $2,000 for large removals or complex multi-day projects.
However, their size and popularity can mean scheduling delays. They can sometimes take a few weeks to get on their schedule, especially after high-wind events.
Impressive, thorough cleanup and complete removal of all tree debris
“I have used this company several times to trim and remove large trees, and their work is consistently excellent. I especially appreciate how carefully they work around my extensive landscaping. Their thorough cleanup and complete removal of all tree debris is impressive. I highly recommend them.”

Always professional, safe, and with great attention to detail
“I have worked with Daniel Kump at Davey Tree in the past for landscaping at our corporate headquarters. Daniel and his team have always been professional, safe and shown great attention to detail. The crew of Jacob, Ed and Candy recently came out on a weekend to trim our palms, remove a dead tree and treat our agave plants. Safety signs were posted, and the crew wore the necessary safety gear. The job was completed on time and no debris was left behind. A+ service!!”
