False Idol was a tiki lovers dream! From the moment you step through the entrance you’re fully immersed into a tropical getaway! We came to celebrate my 33rd birthday and Crizel and team made our experience super memorable! The drinks were well crafted and delicious and the service was absolutely above and beyond. Honestly one of our best experiences in San Diego, we cannot recommend this fun tiki bar enough! Thank you Crizel and False Idol!!!

You won’t be disappointed

It will be packed if you don’t reserve a table . Mostly standing and sitting seating . First off GREAT drinks had the UBE BAE and MISSONARY’S DOWNFALL get those great taste and pretty strong with a sweat flavor for the ube and mint flavor on the missonary. Vibe was pretty nice a little dark but a great space for friends and a S/O . Come for the tiki bar, drinks, and ambiance you wont be disappointed!!

Really great place

The first bar I’ve ever been to in San Diego and I know it’s going to be a favourite.  Apparently the longest-standing bar in Downtown; the building dates from 1874 and is spread over three distinctly different floors.

Only went to the main bar on this occasion, a Saturday afternoon.  Great selection of craft beers, awesome bar tender, and excellent live music from Shaun.  Really great place.

Cool atmosphere

Amazing bar with great drinks. Really good cocktails as well. Many of the bartenders work at multiple bars, so ask around for other good spots. I had a Walk on the Beach and a Purple Lamborghini. Both were very delicious. Cool atmosphere too.

Highly trained bartenders possess deep knowledge, gladly guiding patrons through the thousands of bottles lining the walls.

Fresh, non-frozen ingredients fuel the kitchen. Delectable food options include custom burgers and artisanal charcuterie boards, making it a fantastic place to unwind for a weekend brunch.

Moreover, guests gain access to rare labels found nowhere else in the city. This expansive variety guarantees an elevated tasting experience for any spirit enthusiast.

On the other hand, the jaw-dropping collection can feel slightly overwhelming when ordering quickly. The massive menu takes time to read, so it’s tough to make a fast choice when feeling indecisive.

Pros

  • Fresh culinary ingredients
  • Massive global spirit selection
  • Morning brunch availability
  • Deeply experienced staff

Cons

  • Overwhelming menu scale

I’d come back again for sure

Came in for dinner and ended up staying longer than planned. The place had a nice relaxed vibe, not too loud and not too quiet either. Food was better than I expected, especially the burger and fries. Drinks were made well and didnt taste watered down like some spots do. Server was friendly and checked on us just enough. Prices felt pretty fair for a restaurant and bar combo. It did get a little busy later in the evening, but that usually means people like it. I’d come back again for sure.

Definitely worth the visit

Awesome bar, very reasonably priced compared to other bars in gas lamp district. We had the New York Strip which was tasty and cooked perfectly.

We loved the Chesterfield Sofas and in fact spent our evening here as we loved it. Definitely worth the visit and will be somewhere we visit again without a doubt!!

Lovely speakeasy

Absolutely loved this speakeasy!  We didn’t have food but we went in for some after dinner drinks.  Had a great time sitting at the bar and speaking with Amadeus.  He makes some great cocktails too.  The secret way to get in was fun and unexpected so I won’t share that with you.  The Japanese feel is subtle and rich.  Just a lovely, cool and lowkey elegant experience.  Can’t wait to bring some friends and clients here!

You will not be disappointed

Of all the bars I’ve visited in my life, none have had such unique flavors as this bar. The drinks and service were truly spectacular. Next time I’m in SD, I definitely will come back here.

Make a reservation. You will not be disappointed.

5. Good Night John Boy

Website: https://goodnightjb.com/sandiego

Address: 401 G St

Contact: (619) 403-2646

Hours: Friday-Saturday 7:00 PM-Closing

Good Night John Boy offers a stylized social space themed around nostalgia, bringing a colorful era back to life for anyone looking to escape the modern world. Groovy tracks and vintage decor create a highly interactive environment that gets people moving.

This bar functions brilliantly as an event-focused social venue where individuals can celebrate. Guests can enjoy creative cocktails like Mood Ring, Bad Mama Jama, and Burn Baby Burn, or choose classic beers.

Comfort snacks are also served, including hot sliders and crispy finger foods to enjoy while soaking in the retro scenery.

I love that this lively setup delivers an upbeat atmosphere that keeps patrons dancing and drinking all night long. The continuous high-energy vibe ensures an unforgettable throwback party experience.

Unfortunately, if you aren’t a fan of throwback music or vintage styling, the intense theme might feel a bit excessive.

Pros

  • Prominent downtown district
  • Distinct visual concept
  • Multi-city established brand
  • Event-focused social design

Cons

  • Not ideal for patrons looking for modern aesthetics
