The atmosphere is always buzzing and lively, making it the kind of spot where the conversation flows as easily as the cold sake. 

I love the late-night kitchen menu that stays open until 10:15 PM, which is a total lifesaver for those of us who lose track of time. The separate last-call times for the sushi bar and the kitchen show that they really think about how people like to dine. 

Also, the ramen here is a must-try for any comfort food seeker. Just keep in mind that they are strictly a dine-in only establishment, so do not expect to grab a bowl to go.

“Great food and service”

You’ll feel like you’re in an Izakaya (Japanese Pub) in Japan. Great food and service. Many like the ramen but I go the less messy route and get the excellent teriyaki beef bowl. Appetizers are very good, I recommend the gyoza and the fried garlic. They don’t open until dinner at 530pm so no lunchtime or afternoon visits. Parking can be tough, lot is small and street parking can be difficult.

YUM 😋 Intimate casual dining with delicious Japanese food & great prices! A small establishment with no visible signage on the door & limited parking… totally worth the trip. Try the ramen, sashimi & sushi…everything! The servers are great too 🙂

I remember the first time I pulled into the strip mall parking lot here and wondered if I was in the right place, but one bite of their premium nigiri (sliced raw fish over rice) cleared that right up. 

Sushi Ota is all about the daily fresh catches, and their “Tokusen Nigiri” plate is something I still dream about on a weekly basis. This dish features top-tier cuts like Bluefin Tuna Rib Meat that literally melts on your tongue. 

The Chef’s Choice Sashimi is another standout because it changes based on whatever is freshest that morning. 

I also love how easy it is to snag a spot through OpenTable, which is a relief since they are constantly busy. And if you prefer a quiet night at home, they even have a dedicated phone line just for to-go orders. 

Be careful with your timing, though, as they only open for dinner on several days.

“This place is all about the food…”

Probably no one needs a Sushi restaurant review from someone who grew up in Connecticut in the 1960s and 70s (my parents thought of rice as “Chinese food”) but for what it’s worth, as an adult I fell in love with Japanese cuisine and this was the best Chirashi Sushi I’ve ever eaten. This place is all about the food and it was beautiful and fresh. I live thousands of miles away, but when I’m back in San Diego, this will be my first stop.

“It was like being in Kyoto all over again…”

I love to test Japanese restaurants by ordering the omakase meal. We sat at the counter of this tiny restaurant. Our chef served us each one piece of sushi or sashimi at a time. You know you have struck gold when you have to close your eyes to savour the party in your mouth with each piece! The ambience was lovely, quiet and authentic. The chefs explain each item of food they prepare, with charm whilst remaining unobtrusive. It was like being in Kyoto all over again ( for my family and me).

“Some mean Japanese food”

A dining experience that is truly a cut above the rest. The staff are friendly, accommodating, attentive, and sincere. The chefs are funny, personable, and make some mean Japanese food. The quality of the fish is honestly second to none, most of it is flown in from Japan, and the difference is obvious when you taste it.

Chef Soichi is a fantastic guy, who comes out from behind the counter with his guitar to hang out and sing happy birthday to his guests. Reservations are tough to get, and with good reason, it’s always a great visit.

There’s a certain warmth to Azuki Sushi that hits you the moment you walk through the door, likely thanks to the leadership of Owner and Executive Sushi Chef Nao Ichimura. 

The menu here manages to balance bold, signature rolls with some seriously decadent specialty plates, like the Uni Toast. That toast is an absolute umami bomb featuring sea urchin and truffle aioli that you just cannot find anywhere else!

Also, if you enjoy high-end spirits, they serve some incredible Japanese whiskies like The Yamazaki. After dinner, if you’re looking to keep the night going, there are some wonderfulwine tasting spots nearby to explore. 

Overall, it’s no surprise they were honored with the 2024 Diners’ Choice Award, because the quality is consistently high. 

But just a heads-up for those on a plant-based diet: while they have plenty of seafood, there is no vegan dish included among their set dishes (the ones that come with miso soup).

That’s not your average sushi restaurant. That’s THE Japanese Restaurant. Vibrant, clean, friendly staff and the menu is absolutely incredible.

We love: the Salmon Special, the Toro Sushi, the Crab Fried Rice is amazing and the famous R you kidding me is so yummy. But yes I suggest to make reservation.
