Welcome to pet parenthood in Sunny California! Raising an animal is rewarding, but let’s face it: when they get sick, it’s stressful.
Whether you’re a new pet parent trying to navigate vaccination schedules or a long-time owner managing a senior dog’s ongoing needs, finding a reliable partner in pet care is essential.
I’ve scoured the city to find the best vet in San Diego, evaluating everything from routine wellness exams to late-night emergency clinics.
After all, our pets are family, and they deserve cheerful, loving, and practical care that keeps them healthy and happy for years to come.
How much does vet care cost in San Diego?

Hours: Monday to Sunday 8:00 am – 6:00 pm
Finding a clinic that easily handles both routine wellness and high-level urgent care is incredibly reassuring for any pet owner.
Under the leadership of Dr. Elena Vassilev, a board-certified Emergency and Critical Care Specialist (DACVECC), B Street Veterinary Hospital offers this hybrid model so you can manage sudden injuries and standard check-ups in one spot.
They treat a massive variety of animals, from classic cats and dogs to exotic birds, reptiles, and even small farm animals like goats.
If your furry friend has ongoing pain, their holistic treatments, including acupuncture and veterinary low-level laser therapy (VLLLT), provide excellent alternative relief.
They’re open every day of the week, which is wonderful for busy schedules.
However, because they juggle urgent cases alongside general care, standard wellness appointments can book up weeks in advance, making it tough to get in for routine check-ups on short notice.

Extremely compassionate and caring
I went to this vet office this weekend because no other vet was open near by. I unfortunately had to put my little one down 😢. The doctor and staff that attended my little dude was extremely compassionate and caring. They even sent me a little momento to keep and always remember my dog. Thank you guys so much for your service and your compassion. You guys are amazing.

Showed genuine concern
Went here through a referral for a cat I have who had had a seizure just before Christmas. They got us in quickly, showed genuine concern about her well-being, and kept us updated throughout the day. Still no idea what caused the seizure and none since, so hopefully a one time thing. I would definitely recommend this clinic to anyone needing urgent care for their pet!

2. VEG ER for Pets

Website: https://www.veg.com/locations/california/san-diego
Address: 980 Camino De La Reina
Contact: +1 (619) 346-4249
Hours: Available 24/7
What makes VEG ER for Pets so unique is their “stay together” policy, allowing you to remain by your pet’s side during the entire visit—even through ultrasounds and surgeries.
When my own dog had a severe allergic reaction late at night, being able to sit on the floor with him in their open-plan hospital kept us both calm.
They handle emergencies for exotics and birds, and you can also call ahead and speak directly to a doctor to assess the situation immediately.
But because they’re strictly an emergency facility, you can’t go here for routine vaccines or general wellness.
Naturally, you can also expect the specialized 24-hour care to come with higher emergency-level pricing, but the absolute transparency and immediate attention are well worth it in a panic.

Very positive experience
I highly recommend. It’s an open concept but rooms if you need. You get to stay with your pet during treatment. If they are hospitalized you can stay overnight with them in the room or visit anytime you want. I had a very positive experience with every single staff member. They took such good care of my cat during his hospitalization and even took time to make sure I was okay. They called me in the evening and morning to give me updates.

Checked in on us frequently
We were so lucky to have had Dr. Day and his team attend to our cat. They treated him immediately when we walked through the door and worked with our cardiologist to get the proper tests he needed. What was an incredibly stressful situation was mitigated by the care of Dr. Day’s team. They checked in on us frequently despite having other cases to manage, let us stay by our cat’s side the entire time he was receiving tests, and didn’t take any risky measures to treat his condition. 10/10 would recommend Dr. Day and his team!

3. San Diego Bay Animal Hospital

Address: 3681 Sports Arena Blvd
Contact: (619) 481-3007
Hours: Monday to Friday: 08:00 am – 07:30 pm; Saturday to Sunday: 08:00 am – 06:30 pm
Convenience and comprehensive care are the biggest draws for busy folks looking after their four-legged companions.
San Diego Bay Animal Hospital operates as an “everything under one roof” facility, combining standard wellness, advanced surgery, internal medicine, and daytime emergency services seven days a week.
With an on-site lab, pharmacy, and advanced Class IV warm laser therapy for pain management, you rarely have to run around town to different specialists for treatments.
For new pet parents, they provide a helpful $25 discount on the first exam, freeing up your budget for standard dog boarding facilities when you travel.
The extended weekend hours also make scheduling easy, even if you spent your entire Saturday exploring local theme parks.
On the downside, they cater specifically to cats and dogs, so owners with more unusual animals must look elsewhere. Additionally, they’re not open overnight for true midnight emergencies.

Friendly and attentive
Took my 2 year old pup here and the staff were great! Would highly recommend. Dr. Luecking was friendly and attentive and our RVT was also kind and informative! We came for a wellness exam and vaccine plus anal gland expression and were in and out within 25 min. 🙂

They were very gentle
This environment was clean and welcoming. The staff was friendly and professional. My dog was nervous and they were very gentle with her. She was treated for allergies which was a shot of cytopoint antibiotic and a wash for her wounds. We did also take a recommended supplement for both our dogs. Overall great experience and so grateful they are open on the weekends.

4. Kensington Veterinary Hospital

Hours: Monday – Friday: 7:00 am – 12:30 pm | 1:30 pm – 6:00 pm
Deep community roots and rigorous medical standards define this charming neighborhood clinic.
Kensington Veterinary Hospital holds a prestigious American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accreditation, ensuring they follow strict safety guidelines that only a small percentage of clinics achieve.
I chatted with a neighbor whose senior cat receives veterinary acupuncture here, and they love the hospital’s integrative approach that blends traditional medicine with holistic therapies.
They’re fully equipped with high-end diagnostic technology, including digital dental X-rays and on-site ultrasound, yielding fast answers without requiring outside referrals.
The diverse medical team also has specialized interests in everything from oral surgery to exotics.
However, reaching the clinic can be a bit stressful; its historic location features narrow streets and a very tight driveway leading to the back parking lot. They’re also entirely closed on Sundays, so you’ll need a backup plan for weekend emergencies.

Nothing was rushed or forced on us
Very accommodating and knowledgeable staff. From the phone to the many doctors there, my dog Teddy was always able to feel cared for and nothing was rushed or forced on us. Dr Rose was our primary doctor and she has been wonderful to work with. My dog doesn’t warm up to many people but she has a way of gaining his trust and she takes the time to explain, in detail, what his problems are and how we can fix them. Her follow up is amazing. The best Vet I have ever worked with, hand down!

5. West Coast Animal Hospital

Hours: Monday – Saturday 8:00 am – 6:00 pm
Easing anxiety is just as vital as treating the illness, especially for nervous pets.
West Coast Animal Hospital excels in creating a stress-free environment, holding a specialized “Cat-Friendly” certification from the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) to ensure kitties feel safe.
Holding an impressive AAHA accreditation, they also provide access to specialty experts, including an on-staff certified animal chiropractor and partnerships with board-certified surgeons.
If your furry family member gets easily overwhelmed, their team uses specific handling protocols and quiet rooms to keep things calm.
Plus, they’re conveniently open seven days a week, making it simple to squeeze in a visit around your work hours.
The major limitation is their species scope; they strictly treat cats and dogs, leaving exotic pet owners out of luck. Also, despite their generous daily hours, they don’t provide 24-hour overnight emergency care.

Loved everything about the office, the vet, the support staff
We came to the vet because of the need for cardiac services for our Keeshond and came away with a desire for a new vet for our three dogs. We were in and out in less that 20 minutes. We loved everything about the office, the vet, the support staff, the site, the parking, the waiting room, and the photo backdrop for the fall season. I highly recommend going to them for vet services!

Incredibly kind, patient and very thorough
We take our 2 dogs to West Coast Animal Hospital and love everything about their clinical starting with the staff, clean facilities, easy to book appointments, and love how the vets and vet techs care for their patients. We also request Dr. Hodgson for all our appointments. He is incredibly kind, patient and very thorough. Our dogs are fear reactive and doesn’t take too well at the vet and he is so patient with both our dogs and always answers all of our questions. Marvette was our recent vet tech and she was wonderful as well! 10/0 recommend WCAH!
