Finding a great comedy club in San Diego can turn an ordinary night into the kind of story you retell for weeks.
The San Diego comedy scene has a little of everything, from basement stand-up in the Gaslamp Quarter to clean improv and community-run shows in Normal Heights.
I wanted places that felt fun in real life, not just popular online. So, I narrowed this list to venues with strong lineups, comfortable rooms, fair ticket value, and enough personality to make the laughs feel worth leaving the house for.
How much does going to a comedy club cost in San Diego?

1. American Comedy Co. San Diego

Website: https://americancomedyco.com/
Address: 818 6th Ave. [Gaslamp Quarter]
Contact: (858) 358-3358
Hours: Tuesday, 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM; Wednesday-Thursday, 8:00 PM – 9:30 PM; Friday-Saturday, 7:30 PM – 11:00 PM; Sunday, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM
When you head downstairs into American Comedy Co., the room immediately has that classic underground club feel. I like that it sits in the Gaslamp Quarter, so it’s easy to pair the show with dinner or drinks nearby.
The American Comedy Co. (ACC) Breakout Artist showcase is the draw for me because it gives the audience a chance to catch comics before they become much harder to book.
They also serve a full dinner menu, which helps when your group doesn’t want to rush through a separate meal beforehand.
There’s a strict no-outside-food policy, though, and street parking around the area can be frustrating on weekends. Still, the staff manages busy crowds well, and the intimate basement setup keeps the energy focused on the stage.
I would definitely come back again and again
Hands down THE BEST comedy club in SD. Delicious bites, wide variety of drinks and friendly staff. I have been here twice and thoroughly enjoyed each time. Kelly was our server and she is the sweetest! Very attentive and welcoming, ensuring our needs were met during our entire visit. I would definitely come back again and again.
Best comedy club in San Diego
Acc is the best comedy club in San Diego! Our server was John and he was amazing! Very attentive to make sure our drinks were filled, but not disruptive to the show. Also the bar bites were amazing! Definitely recommend the American Comedy Co and server John to everyone coming to San Diego!

2. Mic Drop Comedy

Website: http://www.micdropcomedy.com/
Address: 8878 Clairemont Mesa Blvd
Contact: (858) 225-2100
Hours: Wednesday-Friday, 5:00 PM – 12:00 AM; Saturday-Sunday, 3:00 PM – 12:00 AM
If you want a break from the usual nightclubs in San Diego, Mic Drop Comedy feels like a strong alternative. The venue is known for “Hilariously Discharged,” a show built around military veteran comedians, which gives the lineup a distinct local angle.
I also like that they offer Very Important Person (VIP) seating with reserved spots and a meet-and-greet. That can be fun when you’re bringing friends for a special night out.
The club adds variety with intro stand-up classes and weekend brunch shows, so it does not feel limited to late-night sets.
The trade-off is that ticket transfers carry a fee, and the schedule starts later in the week, so early-week plans may not work here.
Always a great experience
I’ve been to over 30 shows since this venue opened and it is always a great experience! Main room and gold room are great. Top comics, excellent parking and great food make it the best comedy club in San Diego. Also major shout out to Natasha at the front. She always greets me by name!
Never disappointed
Hands down, the best comedy club in San Diego! My friends and I go every other week and are never disappointed. The venue is super intimate, the food and drinks are yummy and creative and the staff is amazing. My favorite part is that parking is free and easy!
3. Mad House Comedy Club

Website: http://madhousecomedyclub.com/
Address: 801 Fourth Ave
Contact: (619) 269-1987
Hours: Wednesday-Sunday Box Office, 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM; 12:00 PM – 10:00 PM on Friday-Saturday
Mad House Comedy Club is the kind of casual downtown stop I’d pair with breweries in San Diego before the show. Its “World Famous Mad House Comedy Club Favorites Show” packs eight comedians into a single lineup, keeping the pace moving.
I also like that the box office is flexible about honoring tickets for a future show if your original plan falls through. Plus, the relaxed dress code also makes it easy for groups who just want a low-pressure night out.
The biggest drawback is parking because the club doesn’t have its own lot, so you may need to use nearby structures. It can also get loud, but that energy fits the uncensored room and its mix of local and touring comics.
The atmosphere was fun
I loved the energetic stand-up comedy at Mad House Comedy Club. The atmosphere was fun and the drinks were reasonably priced, making it a perfect spot for a date night. Would definitely come back again!
Great time at Mad House
My wife and I had a great time at the Mad House Comedy Club! We were there on a date night for our anniversary. I would definitely recommend going here for a show if you want to have a good time with a great atmosphere. The drinks are reasonable and very good!
4. National Comedy Theatre

Website: http://www.nationalcomedy.com/
Address: 3717 India St
Contact: (619) 295-4999
Hours: Thursday-Sunday, 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
National Comedy Theatre is the best fit here if you want laughs without worrying about R-rated material. The whole setup is built around clean, interactive improv, so audience suggestions shape the show from night to night.
In my book, this place is perfect for families, office groups, and anyone who wants something more participatory than a standard stand-up set. Their corporate team-building events and improv classes add to that community feel.
The tradeoff is the first-come, first-served seating. If your group wants to sit together, you need to arrive early and plan around that.
Still, being allowed to bring your own food and drinks helps keep the night affordable, and the 25-year history gives the venue a reliable local feel.
Best place for improv
If you like improv, this is the place for you. Expect to get there a bit early if you want your party to sit together. This is not like a comedy club with table service and a drink minimum. Seats are comfortable. Staff is amazing, and the show keeps changing, so come with good suggestions to help.
Super small audience
Seriously so funny. I love how every night the material, staff, and layout are different, so you can go back as many times as you want and never get bored. Super small audience, so there’s not a bad seat in the house. They use the audience for content, which makes it interactive and exciting.
5. Comedy Heights

Website: http://comedyheights.com/
Address: LeStats Theater, 3343 Adams Ave, Normal Heights
Contact: (619) 679-5960
Hours: Friday-Saturday, 7:30 PM – 10:00 PM
Comedy Heights feels more like a neighborhood comedy hangout than a polished downtown club, and that is part of the charm.
It runs inside LeStats Theater in Normal Heights and keeps the tone around a PG-13 level, so the shows stay accessible without feeling stiff.
Founded by local pros Al Gavi and Maria Herman, the venue focuses on quality stand-up without heavy cover charges. Some shows are free or low-cost, though tipping the comics through cash or Venmo is expected.
The main downside is the limited seating and no-reservations setup. Busy nights can feel like a gamble if you arrive late.
Even so, the intimate room, outside-snack policy, and mix of local veterans and visiting comics make it easy to like.
Lots of laughter
I love this place so much. My bestie and I frequent it all the time for a great time and lots of laughter. Twiggs next door has great snacks and beverages. Everyone at the comedy is friendly and personable. A total gem!
We have a good time
My boyfriend and I go every weekend, either Friday or Saturday. Every time we go, we have a good time! Comedians normally change every weekend and are usually pretty funny. Clean shows and an intimate vibe. Highly recommend.
